Beverly’s Story

Beverly Marie Jones (Lewis) was born in the heart of Amish country—Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At the tender age of nine, she began writing short stories and poetry. Prior to that, she made up lyrics to the "little fingers" piano pieces she learned, at the age of five.

"My mother saved everything I wrote, even the stories I dreamed up during my grade school years," Beverly says. One such tale is semi-autobiographical, about a young girl whose parents can no longer afford to give her piano lessons. The manuscript was 77 pages long and titled "She Shall Have Music," penned under the shade of a lone willow tree. "Reading, writing, and playing piano have been top three on my list of favorite things," she says.

Not until her own children were well into middle school did Beverly seek to publish her work, first in magazines such as Highlights for Children, Dolphin Log, and Guideposts for Kids. I've had my nose in a book, for as long as I remember. When I was about 9 years old, I started writing my own stories. By sixth grade, I'd hand-written a 66-page semi-autobiographical book titled, "She Shall Have Music."

After I was married and our three children were in middle school, I began submitting articles and short fiction to various magazines.

My first book (Holly's First Love) was published in May 1993, the start of a 14-book series for pre-teen girls. Soon after, my first chapter book was published for 7-10-year-old readers ("Big Bad Beans") which later became part of my 24-book series, The Cul-de-Sac Kids. I wrote another long-running series for girls, titled "SummerHill Secrets," which was set very close to Neffsville, PA, where I grew up--near the heart of Amish country.

But it was the story of my grandmother Ada Buchwalter's shunning by her ultra-strict father and subsequently her old order Mennonite community that nudged me toward writing adult fiction. THE SHUNNING was published in 1997 by Bethany House Publishe

Beverly Lewis was born Beverly Marie Jones in 1949, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the heart of ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’ country. She played and composed on the piano and wrote avidly from a very young age. Beverly’s father was an Assemblies of God pastor, and she was raised in that denomination. However, she became fascinated with her ancestral links to the Old Order Mennonite community into which her maternal grandmother, Ada Buchwalter, had been born. Beverly’s deep affinity for her Amish heritage has inspired much of her prodigious literary output - over eighty books for both children and adults.

Beverly graduated from Evangel University with a degree in Music Education, and became a schoolteacher. When her own three children were middle school age, Beverly began submitting stories to children’s magazines. Her first book Mountain Bikes and Garbanzo Beans was published in 1993.
