Description

“Come, come! I’m sick to death of this particular self. I want another.”

As his tale begins, Orlando is a passionate sixteen-year-old nobleman whose days are spent in rowdy revelry, filled with the colorful delights of Queen Elizabeth I’s court. By the close, three centuries have passed, and he will have transformed into a thirty-six-year-old woman in the year 1928. Orlando’s journey is also an internal one—he is an impulsive poet who learns patience in matter of the heart, and a woman who knows what it is to be a man.

Virginia Woolf’s most unusual creation, Orlando is a fantastical biography as well as a funny, exuberant romp through history that examines the true nature of sexuality.

Orlando: A Biography

Opis

Virginia Woolf's fantastical novel about an Elizabethan nobleman who lives for three centuries and transitions into a woman, with a new introduction by Carmen Maria Machado.

The long-lived protagonist of Orlando begins as a passionate teenage aristocrat, whose days are spent in rowdy revelry at the colorful Tudor court of Queen Elizabeth and his nights in writing earnest poetry. A favorite of the elderly queen, he falls in love with and is jilted by a wayward Russian princess. Two kings later, now in his thirties, Orlando is sent to serve as ambassador to Constantinople, where he awakens one day to find himself in the body of a woman. The Lady Orlando takes this circumstance in stride. She returns to England, engages in love affairs with both men and women, consorts with the famous poets of each age, finds happiness with a gender-nonconforming husband, and at last achieves publication of her own epic poem in the year 1928. A playful and exuberant romp through history, Orlando is Woolf's most lighthearted and unusual novel.

Orlando, who starts the novel denoted as a ‘He—for there could be no doubt of his sex, though the fashion of the time did something to disguise it’ in a gorgeously poetic reimagining of the Elizabethan age, to later awaken ‘she’ in a life that stretches into the 1920s. As accomplished a novel as Woolf ever wrote, the density of its vibrant prose delivered through a playful tension of biographical writing with stream-of-consciousness is held aloft by a witty humor while soaring on wings of obvious joy and love for both her craft and the novel’s inspi
