Franz Doppler

Albert Franz Doppler (16 October 1821 – 27 July 1883) was a flutevirtuoso and a composer best known for his flute music. He also wrote one German and several Hungarian operas for Budapest, all produced with great success. His ballet music was popular during his lifetime.

Life

Doppler was born in Lemberg (Austrian Empire), now Lviv, Ukraine. From 1828 to 1831, he received flute lessons from his father, Joseph Doppler, who was an oboist, and made his debut as a flautist at the age of 13. He formed a flute duo with his brother Karl, four years younger, who mainly wrote songs and incidental music, and as a duo they caused quite a sensation throughout Europe.[citation needed] They toured and both became members of the orchestra of the German Theatre, Budapest, in 1838 and both moved to the Hungarian National Theatre in 1841. Born in Salzburg at Haus Makartplatz 1, the third of five children of master stonemason Johann Evangelist Doppler and his wife Theresia (maiden name Seeleuthner).

Elementary school in Salzburg and middle school in Salzburg and Linz

From 1810 to 1816, Christian Doppler attended primary school in Salzburg.

Because of his delicate physique, there was no question of this son of a stonemason entering into the family business after elementary school. The only option for Christian to find a place in good society was to take up commerce or seek out a liberal profession in the gradually growing educated middle classes.

In order to get a professional training in commerce Christian attended three years of middle school in Salzburg (1816 to 1819) and an additional fourth year (1820/21) in Linz.

Abstract

Christian Andreas Doppler is renowned primarily for his revolutionary theory of the Doppler effect, which has deeply influenced many areas of modern science and technology, including medicine. His work has laid the foundations for modern ultrasonography and his ideas are still inspiring discoveries more than a hundred years after his death. Doppler may well earn the title of Homo Universalis for his broad knowledge of physics, mathematics and astronomy and most of all for his indefatigable investigations for new ideas and his ingenious mind. According to Bolzano: “It is hard to believe how fruitful a genius Austria has in this man”. His legacy of scientific achievement have seen Doppler honoured in the later years on coinage and money, names of streets, educational institutions, rock groups, even of a lunar crater; while the ultimate tribute to his work is the countless references to the homonymous medical eponym.
