Richard Todd Biography

Richard Todd got his start in football in college at the University of Alabama under legendary coach Paul Bear Bryant. He became a three year starter where he had 16 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions in 189 pass attempts. Todd was also quick on his feet running for 1,254 yards in his college career. Todd became the 6th overall pick in the 1976 NFL Draft where he went to the New York Jets and replaced another Alabama legend, Joe Namath. At just 23 years old Richard took over the starting quarterback position and in his first five seasons success was scarce. He began to be booed by the fans and criticized by the media for his performance. Everything changed in 1981 when he led the team to its first winning season since 1969 and made it all the way to playoffs. In his career Richard hung up the helmet with 932 yards rushing for 14 touchdowns. He also had 1,610 completions in 2,967 attempts for 20,610 yards and 124 touchdowns.

Carl Richard Todd (born November 19, 1953) is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL) from 1976 to 1986. Like former Jets quarterback Joe Namath and Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, he played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. Todd was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 1976 NFL draft with the sixth overall pick.

In high school, Todd attended Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama. Individually, Todd owned the state shot-put record at the time. Eleven years after the Jets chose Alabama quarterback Joe Namath in the first round of the 1965 AFL Draft, they selected Alabama quarterback Richard Todd in the first round of the 1976 NFL Draft.

"I thought it was great, I get to go play with Joe Willie," Todd said. "I met Joe when I was a sophomore in college. He'd come over and work out, so I'd known Joe for quite a while.

"He was my idol when I was growing up. It was really cool hanging around Joe. Just watching his leadership and the way he played, the way he looked at things. He was hurt after the third or fourth game (in my rookie year), and I was kind of thrown into the melee at that time.

"He was there for one year and then he (was waived by the Jets) and went to L.A. I was hoping they'd let him be my tutor for two, three, four years. It just didn't work out like that."
