John C. Yang is a lawyer and activist who works as president of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-AAJC. Prior to leading AAJC, Yang served as a trade adviser to Obama administration Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker.

Background

Yang began his career in 1992 with the law firm Wiley Rein LLC after receiving his law degree from George Washington University. After 16 years with the firm, Yang became the director of legal affairs for the Asia-Pacific region of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), a Fortune 500 company that makes automotive and commercial equipment. Yang also had experience in the U.S. Department of Commerce as an advisor for East Asia affairs. Additionally, he held various positions throughout the years with the American Bar Association including board member, delegate, and chair positions.

Mr. Yang especially loves poems, novels, plays and other literary art. After graduating from the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, he served as play writer, director and actor. Since 1990, he has created more than a dozen plays, novels, one hundred essay and poems in the United States. He also has published four books. John C. Yang is the president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC.

At Advancing Justice | AAJC, John leads the organization’s efforts to fight for civil rights and empower Asian Americans to create a more just America for all through public policy advocacy, education, and litigation. His extensive legal background enables Advancing Justice | AAJC to address systemic policies, programs, and legislative attempts to discriminate against and marginalize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) and other minority communities.

John has been a leader in the Asian American and Pacific Islander and broader civic community. In 1997, John co-founded the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the direct service legal needs of Asian Pacific Americans in the D.C. metropolitan area.
