Jon pestoni artist biography

David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Art Cologne 2017 with a solo presentation of new paintings by Jon Pestoni. Featuring works on canvas as well as large-scale works on paper, the presentation highlights recent innovations in Pestoni’s approach to abstraction and his increasingly heterogeneous vision of what painting is and what it can represent.

Pestoni has long been interested in the contradiction of pushing compositions forward by introducing elements that block, obfuscate, or cancel out their visual foundations. These have included the application of layers of paint that cover receding arrays of previous moves, or the use of non-traditional materials like ceramic aggregate that disrupt surfaces otherwise characterized by their consistency. Such strategies evoke the anxieties of a moment when it has become difficult to describe art history, not to mention history in general, in terms of linear progress. In Pestoni’s hands, painting, the most traditional and seemingly stable of artistic mediums, becomes a palimpsest on which the urgen

Over the past two years, the contemporary art department has organized exhibitions featuring some of the most original and unorthodox artworks being produced today, but this spring the museum presents the first of two shows that get back to the basics of modern and contemporary art: abstract painting.

In April Jon Pestoni: Some Years, the first solo institutional exhibition for the Los Angeles–based painter, opened at Transformer Station. Occupying both galleries, the exhibition surveys the past five years of Pestoni’s artistic output, ranging from large-scale, monumental abstract canvases to more intimately scaled works on paper. Born in St. Helena, California, in 1969, Pestoni received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1996.

Having worked through a number of painterly modes and processes since the mid-1990s, Pestoni discovered a b

Jon Pestoni

Jon Pestoni is an American abstract painter, who has, through unifying abstract forms over a variety of ground materials and techniques, developed complementary methods that result in layered, petrified paint. Pestoni was born in 1969 in St. Helena, California. He graduated with a BA degree at the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, and got his MFA in 1996 at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Painting as a Process of Self-Examination

Jon Pestoni’s paintings each layer several compositional orders and methodologies - geometric forms, figuration, graphic art, and Abstract Expressionism - such that they become inextricable and perhaps even contradict one another. His work is an investigation of painting’s ongoing ability to accommodate the widest possible variety of ideas on emotional, psychological, and philosophical levels. His practice is predicated on the experience of abstract painting’s basic elements - color, gesture, scale, and surface. The resulting work might accommodate such various marks as drips, splatters, thickly applied paint, and dry
