The 'Noddy' guide to Tertullian

Tertullian lived in the ancient city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia, sometime around 200AD. Very little is known about his life - that little comes either from writers two centuries later1, or from the scanty personal notes in his works2. Much of it has been asserted to be untrue anyway by some modern writers3.

He was born a member of the educated classes, and clearly gained a good education. Life in his times wasn't very different in some ways to the modern day - he indulged his passions as he saw fit, including sex, and like everyone else attended the games where gladiators killed each other and criminals were eaten alive, for the enjoyment of the spectators2.

But among the sights he saw, was that of Christians being executed this way. He was struck with the courage with which stupid and contemptible slave men and little slave girls faced a hideous death, against all nature; and after investigating, became a Christian himself, and turned his budding talents to writing in defense of this despised and victimised group4.

Tertullia

Tertullianus

Tertullian was born about 160 A.D. in Carthage in what is modern Tunisia and Algeria. He was the son of a highly placed pagan centurion. Some scholars think that he was the son of a commander of the proconsul’s guard. This may account for his use of military metaphors such as, for example, his remarks that “the Lord, in disarming Peter, unbelted every soldier.” Tertullian considered that it was almost impossible for any Christian to hold public office or accept military service. This may be because he was a military man. One was expected not only to swear an oath of allegiance to the emperor but also to the gods.

Tertullian’s early years were surrounded by the household gods or deities of Rome. Later he contended vehemently against paganism. Tertullian had a good education and was a brilliant student. He studied rhetoric, the poets, and philosophy in Carthage and then went to Rome where he read law. He had much learning in Stoicism which remained with him throughout his life even when he became a Christian. He had a negative attitude toward philosophy which he cons

Tertullian

Tertullian (Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus) was born around 150 CE. He was a Latin theologian from North Africa who converted to Christianity in 190. At that time, he became his worst apologist at that time. Tertullian’s teaching is a valuable resource for theology, especially for dogmatic theology.

He was born to a pagan family in Carthage, where he was rhetoric. Eusebius writes about him as a lawyer. He was baptized as an adult, the question of priestly ordination is unclear. He lived in marriage. He wrote a very personal treatise “To my wife” (Ad uxorem). Around 207 CE, he went to the Montanists and founded his own sect of Tertullians, who existed at the time of Augustine of Hippo.

Teaching

According to some, Tertullian rejected the feature of, for example, Origen the combination of Christian teaching with Greek philosophy as useless, impossible and harmful (because it leads to pride and heresy). According to Tertullian, Christian truth is the only truth needed and achievable, and access to it is obtained not by
