I. King Jordan is from Glen Riddle, Pennsylvania, a small town outside Philadelphia. Dr. Jordan served four years in the U.S. Navy and during his service, became profoundly deaf as a result of a motorcycle accident. He earned a bachelor of arts from Gallaudet University and a master of arts and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, all in psychology. After earning his doctorate, Dr. Jordan joined the psychology faculty at Gallaudet. He later became the department chairman and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Jordan made history in 1988 when, after a historic protest, he was named president of Gallaudet, the first deaf president since the university was established in 1864. His appointment led to him becoming a spokesperson for the rights and abilities of people who are deaf and people who are disabled.
Dr. Jordan has served as a visiting scholar at universities in the United States as well as in Edinburgh, Scotland; Krakow, Poland; and Toulouse and Marseille, France. Dr. Jordan holds 12 honorary degrees and is the recipient of numerous other awa

Irving King Jordan (born June 16, 1943) is an American educator who became the first deaf president of Gallaudet University in 1988 after the Deaf President Now protest. Gallaudet is the world's only university with all programs and services designed specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
After the week-long protest known as Deaf President Now, the Board reversed its decision and named Jordan, one of three finalists for the position, the eighth president of Gallaudet, the first deaf president since the institution was established in 1864.[1][2]
He appears in the 2011 disability rights documentary Lives W Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., founded in 1864, was the first school for the advanced education of people who are deaf or hard of hearing. It continues to be the only liberal arts university in the world for deaf students, with all of its programs uniquely designed specifically for deaf and hard of hearing learners. However, since its inception in 1864, for over 123 years, every university president had been a hearing person. In 1987, Jerry C. Lee announced his resignation as President of Gallaudet University, so the search for a new president began. There were three candidates:•
