Living on the Edge: The Winter Ascent of Kanchenjunga
Reading Rick Ridgeway's "The Last Step," which is the official account of the expedition, I was left with a not terribly good opinion about Bremer-Kamp. Her husband Terry Bosch was also on the K2 expedition.... she left him partway through and moved into Chris Chandler's tent -- a man with whom she had a passionate (and apparently abusive) relationship. The expedition was fraught with a lot of problems -- mostly ego driven as the entire team wanted to be on the summit and nobody wanted to be known as a load carrying "B team member." I wasn't left with a terribly positive opinion about Chandler either -- who is portrayed as a strong climber who seems to have a bit of a death wish -- or at least a willingness to walk

Cherie Bremer-Kamp, a cardiac-care nurse from Australia, fell in love with Dr. Chris Chandler, an emergency-care specialist from Seattle in 1978 on a mountain-climbing expedition to Pakistan`s K2, the world`s second-highest peak. Hooked on danger and united in their bond ”to live life on the edge,” the two were married in 1980. In the summer of 1981 the pair climbed without oxgyen to within 2,000 feet of the summit of Nepal`s Mount Kanchenjunga, the world`s third-highest peak. An avalanche buried their equipment and prevented a move on to the summit. The next available climbing time slot was in 1985, but only during the fearsome winter months. Bremer-Kamp, 40, describes how love and death met on that remote Himalayan peak in her new book, ”Living on the Edge” (Peregrine Smith Books, $19.95). Recently she told Chicago writer Dennis L. Breo why she plans to return to climbing and to build a medical clinic for the Nepalese in memory of her late husband.
Chris and I wanted to meet the mountain on its own terms, and that`s why we decided to make a second attemp
