Peter Altmeier (12 August 1899 – 28 August 1977) was a German politician (Zentrum, later CDU). From 1947 to 1969, he was the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate. He served as the President of the Bundesrat in 1954/55 and 1965/66. He was born in Saarbrücken and died in Koblenz. He was the longest governing German Minister-President in one single state—longest at all was Bernhard Vogel.

Short Bio

Peter Altmaier was a member of the German Bundestag for 27 years. From 2018 to 2021, he headed the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Before that, Altmaier was head of the Federal Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Tasks. He is one of the defining figures of the CDU, of which he has been a member since 1976, and is considered a close confidant of former Chancellor Angela Merkel. Peter Altmaier passed his first state law examination in 1985 and his second in 1988. In 1990, he was appointed to the European Commission in Brussels, where he served as Secretary General of the Administrative Commission until 1994. Altmaier has been a Knight of the French Legion of Honor since 2004 and Honorary President of Europa-Union Deutschland since 2011.
