Renowned historian Sir Christopher Bayly passes away
Sir Christopher Alan Bayly, one of the world’s most influential historians of India, passed away on April 20 of a heart attack. Bayly was appointed one of two of the University’s Indian Ministry of Culture Vivekananda Visiting Professors in 2013. Bayly revolutionized the field of world history by reshaping people’s understanding of India’s past. In 2007, Bayly was the first academic expert in extra-European history to be knighted, and he was also elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1990.
“Bayly stood out as an exception in the growing specialization in Indian historical research,” Sarath Pillai, one of Bayly’s history Ph.D. students, wrote in an e-mail. “His grip over Indian history and world history made us think about the possibilities of combining both…. Bayly taught us that generosity and humility were indispensable to a mentor/teacher. Sir Christopher Alan Bayly, FBA, FRSL (18 May 1945 – 18 April 2015) was a British historian specialising in British Imperial, Indian and global history.[1][2] From 1992 to 2013, he was Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge.
Biography
Bayly was from Tunbridge Wells, England, where he attended The Skinners School. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. He then remained at the University of Oxford and undertook post-graduate study at St Antony's College, Oxford.[3] He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree in 1970 with a thesis titled The development of political organisation in the Allahabad locality, 1880–1925[4] under John Andrew Gallagher.
