In March 1985, in the street-smart interlude between the New Romantics and Grunge, The Face published a fashion story featuring a posse of beautiful black and mixed-race models, among them a 14-year-old Naomi Campbell. Shot by Jamie Morgan and styled by Ray Petri, the article introduced readers to a new magpie aesthetic known as Buffalo, a look as raw as its name.

Barry Kamen is a British artist of Burmese descent whose work within fashion was a platform for a multi-faceted creative life encompassing film, music, and fine art
In1985 Kamen was featured in The Face magazine as a Buffalo icon, sparking the beginnings of a long-standing relationship with Japan.
During his first stay in Tokyo soon after, he began working with Rei Kawakubo producing sketches and design materials for two seasons and also modelling, walking the runways with Basquiat for Garçon in 1987.
Soon after, he was invited to collaborate on the early collections of Helmut Lang, John Galliano and Jean-Paul Gaultier in Paris and London.
During these years, he played a prominent part in London's edgy and innovative creative life. But while all this incredible creativity in fashion was happening, Kamen's work as an artist was also gaining momentum and maturity.

Barry Kamen was a former model and stylist who fronted the Eighties Buffalo scene.
Born in Essex on September 22, 1963, the Kamen brothers had a mixed heritage of Burmese, Dutch, Irish and English.
Alongside the late stylist Ray Petri, and photographers Mark Lebon, Barry and his Levi’s model brother Nick helped define the look of the pioneering youth culture movement that changed the face of fashion.
Barry and Nick became muses for Petri after meeting him in a clothes shop and they immediately made them the poster boys for a generation tired of commercial fashion.
“He [Petri] took these kids off the street and put them in front of the camera for the first time,” Kamen said of how he found fame.
