Sayed Karim, born in 1911, was the leader of a generation of Egyptian Modernists. After graduating with an architecture degree from Cairo University in 1933, he left for Europe; here, in Switzerland, he would embark upon a postgraduate degree at the University of Zurich in 1935, and then his PhD at ETH Zurich in 1938. Just one year later, he returned to Cairo and established his studio, dividing his career between design and teaching at Cairo University.
Until the 1960s, Karim was one of the most active Modernist architects in Cairo and beyond, working on residential projects, office and commercial buildings and urbanism. He also worked extensively in Baghdad, Damascus, Jeddah, Riyadh, Amman and many other cities in the Middle East. Because of his busy schedule and constant travel, he was dubbed ‘the flying architect’. In his own villa, built in 1948, in a ceramic tile mural, he is depicted astride a camel: the very picture of a man on the move.

Seyed Karim Amiri Firuzkuhi (Persian: سید کریم امیری فیروزکوهی), with the nom de plume, "Amir", was a renowned Iranian poet.
Life
The son of Sayyid Mustafa Quli Muntazam al-Dawla, Amiri Firuzkuhi was born in Farahabad, Firuzkuh.
His ancestors had been governors and military commanders from the reign of Karim Khan to the end of the Qajar rule, so that their names all included the title of amir, meaning emir or king. His father was a modernist under the QajarMuzaffar al-Din Shah accompanying the shah to Europe as a commander and dignitary, thus having the opportunity to directly observe the latest developments of Western civilization.
At the age of seven, Karim was taken by his father to Tehran, though this great change in his life tragically coincided with his father's death. His grandfather, Amir Muhammad Husayn Khan Sardar ('General') became an influential guardian for Karim.
