What Happened to Ali MacGraw? Find Out What the ‘Love Story’ Star and ’70s It Girl Has Been Up to in Recent Years
As the star of the 1970 blockbuster romance Love Story, Ali MacGraw became one of the most popular actresses of the era. While Love Story has often been parodied for its over-the-top melodrama (who can forget the line “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” or the image of the actress on her deathbed while still looking gorgeous and perfectly put together?) its iconic status is undeniable, and it catapulted MacGraw to the A-list.
Here’s a look at how she got her start, and what she’s been up to since leaving the film industry in the ’90s.
A newcomer at age 30
Born Elizabeth Alice MacGraw in 1939, Ali MacGraw had a somewhat unusual career path, as unlike most actresses at the time, who started out in the teens or early 20s, she was already 30 when she made her film debut in the 1969 adaptation of the novel Goodbye, Columbus.

But MacGraw is so honest about her insecurities, so self-deprecating (especially about her middling modeling career) and truthful about her muddled motives, that you simply cheer her on. I managed to mutter something about having to leave to walk the dog and, after throwing on all my clothes, slid out of there without betraying that I found this at all out of the ordinary.”
The It Girl of the In Crowd
MacGraw seemed to be floating through life. She readily admits that with hardly any acting training she found herself the breakout star in 1969’s Goodbye, Columbus. The surprise hit was produced by the legendary lothario Robert Evans, then head of product

At age 22, Ali became an assistant to Diana Vreeland at Harper's Bazaar and stylist at Vogue Her natural beauty and grace impressed the photographers and she was asked to move in front of the camera and do some photo shoots. Her clean, fresh look was a bit hit and she began a successful second career modeling and appearing in TV commercials. She started the Less-is-More look as she needed and used little make-up thus creating a huge trend in women wanting to look natural rather than made-up. She soon turned to acting.
She began her career in acting in 1968 in the movie A Lovely Way to Die but it wasn't until she starred in the movie Goodbye Columbus th
