D. Wayne Lukas
There are very few things that D. Wayne Lukas has failed to accomplish during his distinguished career in American Thoroughbred racing. The Antigo, Wis., native is the leading trainer in Breeders' Cup history with 20 victories and more than $20 million in purses; surpassed "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons in 2013 for the most victories in the Triple Crown series, 14, four of them in the Kentucky Derby; was the first trainer to reach $100 million and $200 million in earnings; has trained 25 champions, three of them Horse of the Year (Lady's Secret in 1986, Criminal Type in 1990 and Charismatic in 1999); led North American trainers in earnings 14 times; and was elected to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 1999.

D. Wayne Lukas: The Coach
In the 1980s and 1990s, Pat Riley and Phil Jackson dominated the National Basketball Association coaching ranks, accounting for 10 championships between them. But during the same time frame another basketball coach was even more dominant than the two NBA legends, he just chose to ply his trade in a different sport.

“Everyone on the backstretch is watching me to see what I’ll do,” Lukas told Daily Racing Form at the time. “Maybe I’ll fall flat on my face, but I don’t intend to. The transition to Thoroughbreds has me more enthused than ever befo

D. Wayne Lukas: The Modern Trainer
D. Wayne Lukas: The Modern Trainer chronicles the life and career of one of the most significant trainers of the current era. The exhibit illustrates how this Wisconsin native combined a love of horses, a strong work ethic and an innovative mind to change and enhance modern Thoroughbred training. Fascinated with horses at a young age, Lukas started training Quarter Horses in the 1960s, eventually being inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007. Moving to Thoroughbreds full-time in the 1970s, Lukas has won 14 Triple Crown races, 20 Breeders’ Cup races and numerous Eclipse Awards recognizing his record 26 champion Thoroughbreds. He was inducted into Thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame in 1999 and is still an active trainer. The exhibit looks at the training innovations that spurred this success, and the impact his methods have had on other trainers and the industry as a whole.
The exhibit largely relies on the personal collection of D. Wayne Lukas to tell this story, a collection he permanently entrusted to the mu
